At that price point, they were by far the most robust lock I'd seen, having perused the wares at 4 separate retailers.When I say robust, it's a big, heavy lock that I imagine would be more discouraging to a thief than the cable lock I was otherwise considering. 1 STAR for that. The first lock I took out of the minimal package and reviewed the instructions. They're very well-written and fully illustrated. 1 STAR for that. It was easy to set the combo, and I liked how the metal gizmo rolled over to cover the combination dials to keep out the road schmutz. 1 STAR for that. The second lock simply wouldn't open for love or money. It was in its original packaging, so it wasn't like some punk prank-locked it at the store. The left-most combination dial on one of them is so stiff and difficult to turn that I actually bruised both thumbs & scraped pieces of thumbnail off just trying to turn the darn thing two digits around (from 0 to 2). The other three dials were movable, but barely. I figured it must be defective, and then tried the second lock, only to find that it was also difficult, but not quite as bad.Figuring that the second lock was at least usable and I'd be keeping it, I sprayed some WD-40 into the dials & rotated them around several times to see if it would loosen things up. Unfortunately it seemed to have no affect at all, so I will definitely be returning the first lock for refund, and will keep the second with hopes that it will eventually loosen up more with continued use. All in all, I am very unimpressed with the combination lock mechanism, and would advise other shoppers to avoid this lock... However, I have a small frame bicycle and I can't figure out a way to mount the lock onto the bicycle with the holder that they ship with it. It's possible that if I took off the water bottle cage on the front diagonal, then I could mount the lock on the back vertical. Meanwhile, the lock goes into a daypack. |
