7 of 8 people found the following review helpful Cork Grips Are Great, By This review is from: Dimension Cork Grips (Misc.) According to various sources, such as Grant Petersen of Rivendell cycle works, all cork grips are a slightly loose fit and require an adhesive. This makes sense as cork does not stretch as much as rubber, so if cork grips were as snug fitting as rubber grips for the same size bar, they might tear. This goes for the composite ones indicated here; I can't say for the solid cork ones made in Portugal, but those are around $30 a pair.So if you want the look of cork grips, these are probably as good as any. Just accept that they require adhesive and move on. I think just about anything will do... the first glue I found around the house was carpenter's glue and it worked fine. I just made sure the bar was clean and grease-free, swirled a little glue inside the grip and put it on. Two weeks later they haven't budged. The key, however, to great looking cork grips is shellac. I was reviving an old English 3-speed and wanted to add a personal touch, so I bought a pair of Dimension Cork grips to replace the hardened rubberized grips. The cork grips fit perfectly, and after using some 3M Spray Adhesive on the bars and inside the grips, they held strong. In order to protect their color and add some durability I finished them off with three coats of Zinser amber shellac, which contributed a deeper finished color and a really nice feeling to the bars. I've ridden it for about a month so far with no problems. If installed correctly, they are etremely durable and comfortable for city riding and classic touring. Pretty and comfortable., By Flaxman (WA, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Dimension Cork Grips (Misc.) I love these grips. They're very comfortable, unlike the silicone grips often installed on new bicycles. I have three pair of them now.I finish them with five or six coats of spar urethane before using them. I use the spray cans of MinWax Helmsman spar urethane, semi gloss or gloss (available at your Home Depot). For fixing them in place on the handlebar an adhesive is needed. I've used DAP Weldwood contact adhesive. This seems to work well and it's been durable. Just put a coating on the handlebars before installing the grip with a turning motion, then wipe off the excess cement. |
